How to Choose a Cat Groomer in Tempe: What Actually Matters
Not all groomers are equal when it comes to cats. Here are the questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and how to find someone who will treat your cat right.

Most grooming salons will tell you they do cats. But there's a big gap between "we accept cats" and "we understand cats."
Cats aren't small dogs. Their skin is different. Their psychology is different. Their stress signals are different. A groomer who's great with Golden Retrievers might be completely lost with a nervous Persian. So when you're looking for someone to handle your cat, here's what actually matters.
Questions to Ask Any Groomer
1. "How long have you been grooming cats specifically?"
Not pets in general. Cats. There's no substitute for time spent reading feline body language. A groomer who's done 10,000 dogs and 50 cats isn't a cat groomer — they're a dog groomer who occasionally does cats.
2. "How long does a cat groom typically take?"
If the answer is "3 to 4 hours" or "we'll call you when they're ready," that usually means your cat is sitting in a cage between steps, listening to dogs bark. That's stressful. A focused, one-on-one cat groom should take about an hour.
3. "Do you have separate spaces for cats and dogs?"
Even if they're not interacting, a cat can smell and hear dogs. For an already-nervous cat, that's enough to trigger the Turkey Timer before the groom even starts. The best situation is a quiet area away from barking, or dedicated cat-only time blocks.
4. "What happens if my cat gets stressed during the groom?"
The right answer is some version of: "We stop. We give them a break. And if they can't settle, we end the session and try again another day." The wrong answer is: "We push through." Pushing through a stressed cat isn't professionalism — it's a liability.
Red Flags
- "We sedate difficult cats." Only veterinarians should sedate animals. Non-medical groomers cannot legally sedate cats.
- "Cats are easy, no problem." This tells you they haven't done enough cats. Every experienced cat groomer has war stories.
- No intake questions about health or behavior. A good groomer wants to know about your cat's history before touching them.
Why I Do What I Do
I groom the cats nobody else wants to groom. The biters, the screamers, the ones who've been turned away from other salons. My approach is simple: I don't fight the cat. I work with the cat. If that means we only get nails and a sanitary trim the first visit, that's what we do. Trust is built, not demanded.
I operate inside Fancy Pets Grooming in Tempe, a salon that's been serving this community for over 30 years. I've got the experience, I've got the patience, and I genuinely care about every cat on my table — even the difficult ones. Especially the difficult ones.
I may not give the fanciest haircut, but no one cares more about — or gives your cat a better, safer, and calmer experience — than me.
