Lion Cut Season: Why Your Cat Needs One Before the Tempe Summer

Arizona summers are brutal — and your long-haired cat feels it. Here's why a lion cut isn't just a style choice, it's a heat safety measure.

Lion Cut Season: Why Your Cat Needs One Before the Tempe Summer

If you live in Tempe, you already know: summer here isn't just hot. It's oppressive. When it's 115°F outside, your long-haired cat is wearing a full winter coat in July. That's not just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous.

What Is a Lion Cut?

A lion cut shaves the body short while leaving the mane, head, and tail tip fluffy. The result? Your cat looks like a tiny lion and feels about 20 degrees cooler. It's the most popular groom I do from May through September — and for good reason.

It's Not Just About Looks

Here's what happens when a long-haired cat goes into an Arizona summer without a trim:

  1. Matting accelerates. Heat + static + dry air = fur tangles faster. Once mats form against the skin, they pull tight and cause pain every time your cat moves.

  2. Overheating risk. Cats don't sweat through their skin like we do. They pant and sweat through their paw pads. A thick coat traps heat and makes it harder for them to regulate their body temperature.

  3. Hygiene issues. Long fur around the rear end collects... everything. In the heat, this becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to infections.

  4. Skin problems go unnoticed. Under all that fur, skin conditions, fleas, and irritations can develop without you ever seeing them.

When Should You Schedule?

May through September is peak lion cut season in Tempe. I recommend booking in early May before the rush hits. By June, I'm doing 3-4 lion cuts a day, and slots fill up fast.

Is a Lion Cut Right for Your Cat?

Lion cuts work best for:

  • Long-haired breeds: Persians, Maine Coons, Ragdolls, Himalayans, Norwegian Forest Cats
  • Senior cats who struggle with self-grooming
  • Overweight cats who can't reach certain areas
  • Any cat with matting issues

Not recommended for:

  • Cats with certain skin conditions (we'll assess first)
  • Extremely anxious cats (we'll discuss a modified approach)

What to Expect

A lion cut takes about 45-60 minutes. Your cat goes home looking dramatically different — some owners don't even recognize them at pickup! The fur grows back fully in 3-4 months, right around when the weather cools down.
